Looking For a Massage Chair? What You Need to Know

1. Define Your Needs: What are your long term needs? With massage chairs comes a wide selection of features, models and manufacturers. First and foremost, what type of relief are you seeking? Then look at what massage therapies can best relieve your trouble areas. If you are looking for full body, then are particular massage techniques that you prefer. Massage chairs are a long term investment and your budget needs to factor this in. These are the salient items to think about for a massage chair.

2. Back Pain Relief: What are the important areas on your back? Do you need more attention on lower back or is shoulder and neck coverage more important. Some massage chairs have grasping which is good around the shoulder and neck areas. A thorough kneading massage in the lower back relieves muscles. Make sure the massage chair reaches the lower lumbar areas to ensure relief. To relieve pressure off the cervical discs, a finger press massage is very relieving. The finger press massage uses the rollers going up and down adjusting each disc as it goes. These are just a few features in massage chair recliners.

3. Massage Therapy: Massage chairs have many massage therapies available. Choose from Shiatsu, Swedish, Hawaiian, Acu pressure, Reflexology, Deep Tissue and many more. It is important to familiarize yourself with the different types as each provides certain benefits. Also, massages can be light and gentle to more invigorating depending on your needs and comfort. Most massage chair recliners offer multiple massage therapies, so make sure the most important ones are covered.

4. Lower Body Massage: Do you enjoy having your feet massaged? The premier massage chair brands deliver reflexology foot massages. The footrest has built in reflexology nodes that gently push up into your reflexology points inducing full body relaxation. Ease those tired feet with the gentle squeeze, hold and release of the reflexology foot massage. If you sit a lot, then get a buttocks massage. The massage chair cycles through massaging both hemispheres and also provides vibration therapy to enhance blood circulation. How about a little stretch? Massage chairs have lower body stretching capability. The footrest holds your feet and then extends out to more positions to stretch your lower back, hips, thighs, knees and ankles. Massage chairs have rapidly advanced the technology and effectiveness of lower body massages. Most massage chair concentrated really on the back, neck and shoulders. This was accomplished using rollers to imitate human hands. The lower body presents more challenges. These companies have developed a mechanical paddle system and air massage using air compression. Some chairs are mixed with both, but the best massage chairs use one or the other. The paddle system is limited to the calf areas. Air massage is much more flexible since the massage is delivered via air bags. These chairs have air bags for the arms, hands, feet, calves, thighs, hips, buttocks providing superior coverage.

5. Warranty Coverage: Make sure you go with a known brand of massage chairs. I would hate to tell you the stories we have gotten from people who bought from a fly by night outfit. One good test is if the massage chair company has retail accounts. If they do not, then who has leverage to make sure the warranty is honored? Most warranties cover parts, labor, in home service vs. service center, and shipping expenses. The difference is what they cover and for how long. Fortune 500 companies make you buy an massage chair industry. Compare warranties and costs and find the right protection for you. How long does the manufacturer cover parts? If you need service, can a technician come to your home or do you need to send your massage chair to a service center. This is important, as sending around 200 lbs of massage chair is not an easy task. Also, how long will the manufacturer pick up any shipping expenses to repair the massage chair?

Looking for a massage chair should be a fun and rewarding experience. It is a special device that can provide years of trouble free operation or turn into a boat anchor. The reason you are looking for a massage chair is to find the relief and invigoration on demand in the comfort of your home. Find out what is important to you and determine some of the must have features of a shiatsu massage chair. Then try a few out and see what works for you. Once you have a good idea of what you like, shop around and get the best deal. Prices vary especially with variables such as tax, shipping, and return policies. This is an important long term purchase, so take your time, enjoy and find the perfect massage chair.

Having a Pet Allergy Is No Fun At All!

Posted on November 5th, 2008
by Dorothy Medlum

Pets provide companionship, security, and a sense of comfort; and more than 70 percent of the United States households have a dog or cat. However, people with allergies need to be careful when trying to decide which kind of pet they can safely bring home.

Being exposed to a pet can leave you sneezing and wheezing. Ten percent of the population is probably allergic to animals. Higher rates of 20-30 percent of people with pet allergies are also suffering with asthma.

Human Allergies to Dogs

There are thousands of people who suffer from allergies to animals. Some of the most heartbreaking cases are people who dearly love their dog and then develop a severe allergy to her and must decide between keeping her or placing the dog in a new home.

The dander, saliva, and the urine are the areas of the dog that people are allergic to. Because dogs and cats are the most common pets, they top the list of animals that people are allergic to. Certain species of animals may contribute to allergies more than other species.

What are the Symptoms?

People who have multiple allergies may be aware when their allergies are responding; they may suffer from runny noses, itchy eyes, asthma symptoms, red itchy skin, or a rash. Those that are not aware of their allergies may think that they simply have a cold.

Are there any hypoallergenic dogs?

Hypoallergenic dogs do not exist. There is also no such thing as a dog that does not shed. All dogs shed! Some dogs do have a denser coat of hair that other dogs, so they would shed a great deal more than a dog with thinner hair. It is the dander and not the hair that causes the allergy. Breeds with less dander include: Poodles, Schnauzers, and Terriers. Many people can be allergic to some types of dogs and not to others.

How can a person reduce symptoms to a pet?

There are some things that you can do to help keep your reactions at bay, if you or a family member is part of the population allergic to dogs. You can do some of the following to make your home more comfortable: Bathe your pet weekly, do not allow the pet on the furniture, do not allow your pet in the house, or do not allow the pet in the car.

It is impossible to avoid animals; they are an integral part of our lives. But, by adopting some good management skills, we can help make our allergies and life with our dog much better for both.

Massage Therapy and Your Health: How Massage Chairs Help!

Posted on November 5th, 2008
by James Knolan

How is it that we just do not ever seem to have enough time. We know we need to take better care of our bodies, but somehow we just keep cutting corners. We are all busy. We know we need to make good health a higher priority, but. Well, you know, but. We do know that stress builds everyday. It is cumulative. How does that stress get reduced? Since ancient times, massage therapy was the preferred method. Today, how about the day spa? Nice, if I had the time. This is where a massage chair can help.

Can a massage chair really help me out? The premier massage chair brands have developed an incredible array of therapeutic massage therapies in their recliners. Massage therapy manipulates both the skin and muscles which helps to relieve and alleviate aches, pain and discomfort. Furthermore, massage chair recliners can perform full body massages. From you feet to your head, today’s massage chair got your covered.

The evidence for massage therapy keeps building. The studies keep showing that massage therapy helps to relax the muscles; reduce the heart rate: increase blood flow and lymph flow; improve range of motion and guess what? Reduce Stress! We all know the massage therapy feels good, but massage therapy is a treatment. The studies also show that like diet and exercise, massage therapy is a process of healing the body. Massage therapy must be performed on a periodic, recurring basis.

Of course, one of the problems of getting a massage is the time involved. By the time an appointment is set, you drive to the spa, and get the massage, and then come back home may all take 2 hours or more. This is great if you always have the time, but most of us do not. A massage chair on the other hand, provides in-home convenience, 24/7 access and no appointment necessary. It is ready, willing and able to relieve your aches and pains.

The traditional massage at a day spa for a full body massage starts with a therapist covering one part of your bodywill and then moving on to the next. If there are 5 major areas of coverage, then the massage therapist spends an average of 10 minutes on each area over a 50 minute massage.

A massage chair on the other hand can deliver the massages to each area in parallel. This significantly reduces the total time for the massage. The massage chair can effectively massage the back, both legs and arms at the same time. Each area is getting massaged all at the same time. This is a lot of massage therapy at one time. But in essence, 10 minutes in the massage chair is equivalent to a 50 minute massage.

What is the most important way a massage chair can help you? Simple, the massage recliner is always available for you when you need it. Having a massage chair at home is an easy way to integrate massage therapy into your daily routine. Massage therapy is most effective when received on a continuous, periodic basis. Stress is built up in the body on a continuous basis with everyday life and needs to be relieved on a continuous basis. Having a massage chair recliner allows you to select from a variety of massage types and focus on trouble areas. Take some time to integrate massage therapy into your total health routine with a massage chair recliner.

It’s Time To Come Clean About The Great Foot Detox Conspiracy

Posted on November 4th, 2008
by Frank Rodriguez

Ever since I heard about ionic detoxification a couple years ago, I’ve been curious about the claims that it can remove toxins from your body. I live in Chicago, so I’m well aware that I’m not breathing clean air or drinking pure water. I’m also honest with myself about the fact that the processed food I regularly eat isn’t doing me any favors.

I’m not willing to eat 100% healthy all the time (I love Chicago pizza too much) or move to the mountains near a freshwater spring (though that does sound really nice), but if there’s technology that can help keep my body optimally healthy, I’m interested in learning more. Fortunately, it’s easy to research “foot detox” online since there are 1000s of websites that talk about it. Unfortunately, there’s two extreme viewpoints that make it difficult to get a balanced opinion about the subject.

On one end you have the companies who sell foot detox equipment or provide it as a service. The longstanding claim of these folks is that the color change that happens during a detox foot bath indicates the part of the body that is being detoxified. On the other end, you have the people who understand some of the science behind this technology, but they unscientifically dismiss all of the many health benefit claims from people who use it. These two opposing sides aren’t paying any attention to each other, which results in confusion for the people who just want to know the truth about this subject.

I want to make one simple point here in an effort to bring some balance to this issue of foot detox - the water in a ionic foot bath will change color whether a person’s feet are in the water or not. But please don’t rush to a conclusion just yet. The cynics have taken this fact as case-closed proof that foot detox offers no health benefits whatsoever. The people who sell detox foot bath units claim the color of the water indicates what part of the body is being detoxified. Sadly, both viewpoints are wrong.

The cynics who understand that oxidation of the metal array accounts for the immediate color change in a ionic foot bath draw the premature conclusion that the entire thing is snake oil and anyone who claims to have health benefits is only experiencing the placebo effect. This is a lazy approach to scientific research because these people are ignoring many health benefit claims that go beyond what the placebo effect is capable of.

I’m not an expert on how a foot detox works, but I’ve done enough research to know that many people are experiencing health benefits that go far beyond what the placebo effect is capable of. Just this week I spoke with a woman who found a hookworm in her ionic foot bath water after a treatment! I’ve spoken with smokers whose water smells strongly of smoke odor. I’m willing to admit that some of the many claims of pain relief can be attributed to the placebo effect, but parasites and strong smoke odors aren’t in your head, they’re real.

I recently spoke with woman who has been providing ionic foot baths to hundreds of people and she talked to me for 45 minutes about the many health benefits her clients have received, and the many doctors who have been mystified by the recoveries their patients have experienced after receiving foot detox treatments.

I’m convinced that most people doing a detox foot bath are getting something more than just the placebo effect, but I still have an issue with the whole color-of-the-water=the-part-of-the-body-being-detoxed claim. If you’ve done a foot detox then you know that the water starts to turn brown almost immediately. This is due to oxidation of the metal array in the water. I’ve talked with dozens of people and most of them have the same color water as me - brown, the color of rust. Water analysis done by a laboratory has confirmed a significant increase in iron. But there’s more to the story. The water starts out brown, but for many people, the water will eventually turn other colors, such as white, green or black. If it’s not rust, then what is it?

The popular color chart used by most ionic foot bath providers says that brown water indicates “liver detoxification, cellular debris and tobacco detoxification”, but there’s no way I’m going to believe that my liver starts shooting toxic debris out of my feet a few seconds after starting an ionic foot bath. I’ve never smoked so that’s not a factor. Several labs have done water analysis and found high levels of iron in the water, so I’m confident in my conclusion that oxidation of the metallic array is what’s causing the water to turn brown.

I’ve talked with dozens of people who regularly use aionic foot bath and most of them have the same color water as me - brown, the color of rust. Now to be fair, not everyone has the same color water, which is why I’m open to there being some truth to the idea that the color indicates the part of the body being detoxed, but the fact remains that many of the proponents of foot detox are ignoring basic chemistry and undermining their credibility in the process.

However, in 2002, Doctor’s Data, Inc., a laboratory in St. Charles, IL, did a before and after water analysis of an ionic foot bath and found significant increases in antimony, arsenic, copper, lead, uranium, barium, cadmium, chromium, nickel, aluminum, iron, manganese and zinc in the detox foot bath that had feet in it compared to the water that had no feet. The increase in heavy metals had to come out of the feet, proof positive that there’s more to this story than simple oxidation of metal.

Another matter that unsimplifies the cynic’s conclusion is that the woman who had the hookworm come out during her ionic foot bath told me her water usually turns black, even though her husband who uses the same unit always has brown water. Is this issue cut and dry? Hardly. Clearly, there’s more to this matter that warrants further research.

Weight Gain And Age

Many research studies in the recent past have said that one vital factor in supporting good health is the introduction of healthy oxygen into the body.

The body gets weak when there is lack of oxygen, which makes diseases and other ailments breed inside.

Diseases and other ailments from the body can be removed by initiating healthy oxygen through the use of my exercise program.

Efforts to lose weight can be aided by oxygen, as shown in recent studies.

As we get older, we can have trouble breathing as effectively as we used to.

As the muscles accountable for our breathing becomes tense and weak, it can have a stunning effect on our body.

The muscles responsible for controlling our diaphragm get tenser as we grow older because we tend to use them to balance our bodies when that is not what they were intended for.

Our diaphragm is responsible for controlling our breathing, but as it becomes tenser over time, it cannot function naturally any longer, and this affects our breathing in a negative way.

Unfortunately what this means for our bodies is that our metabolism is going to slow down over time, making weight loss increasingly difficult over time.

However, there is good news available to you: you can still regain your health and your capability to fight sickness by introducing healthy oxygen into your body.

By turning your body into an oxygen rich environment, you can tune it up, improve your health, and can increase your natural ability to lose weight and to maintain a healthy weight.

Your body could become a weight loss machine, virtually on auto pilot. What I mean by this is that by following my weight loss program and filling your body with healthy oxygen, you can lose weight naturally without insane diets or overwhelming exercise programs.

My exercise program is so simple yet so groundbreaking, and will change your life.

In the past, losing weight has been hard, but my pioneerig program is making it more simple than before. Just do the exercises outlined within it, and you will quickly see a relevant difference in your weight.

Even if you are older, and find it difficult to lose weight no matter how hard you diet and exercise, my weight loss breeze program has what it takes to help you.

Why Anti Acid Drugs Are Not a Long Term Solution to Acid Reflux

Posted on November 3rd, 2008
by Lorna Bresko

The number of people that suffer with acid reflux disorder is on the increase. This is a disorder of the gastrointestinal tract (digestive system) and even though this condition is often known by different names, they have similar symptoms. Hydrochloric acid is used by the digestive system to break down the food we eat. The disorder gives you a burning sensation in your chest near the heart and stomach, when the acid wants to return up the digestive tract.

When food enters your stomach, a valve called the lower esophageal sphincter opens to allow food into the stomach which normally remains closed so that stomach food and acid do not flow back up into your esophagus area. The esophageal sphincter should close and trap the acid but when this doesn’t happen and the acid escapes back up the digestive tract the condition of acid reflux or heartburn is the result. Doctors abbreviate the condition to GERD or gastro esophageal reflux disorder. Although the real cause of acid reflux disorder has not yet been found, it is thought that eating the wrong foods could be to blame; unfortunately, overeating and junk food can also overload the digestive systems ability to digest food adequately.

It is never wise to eat large amounts at is puts a significant strain on the stomach muscles which in turn results in pressure within the gut itself. Something has to give; this being the acid which returns or refluxes back up the esophagus bringing with it the very unpleasant heartburn. Easing this pressure should stop the esophageal valve from opening and acid escaping into the esophagus causing further damage. To help with this condition, adjustments need to be made with regards to the size of meals consumed, which need to be smaller but more frequent. This situation can be a problem for the health of the body as the stomach, esophagus and mouth all need to be in good working order. This is because the stomach is not only responsible for breaking down our food but also for preparing this food to be converted to specific nutrients that everyone’s body needs.

A short term solution may appear to be the drugs that are easily purchased over the counter but guidance is needed. However, these can interrupt natural body processes and cause other health problems. The long term approach to reduce the stomach problems and acid reflux is to adjust how you consume food and drink. This will then allow your stomach to settle down and regain its strength. It may take a while but if the number of times you experience heartburn reduces, you may be able to enjoy some of the foods you stopped eating; all the while remaining conscious of the need to take things slowly and not place stress on your stomach again.

Of course acid reflux can also be aggravated by a number of other situations; for instance:

Being a smoker

Allergic reactions to certain types of food

Prescription medication

Higher than normal alcohol consumption

Having a sleep after eating a meal

Surely a few changes in the way you live your life aren’t too much to ask. The thought of reducing the incidents of heartburn should be sufficient incentive. So by watching what you eat and taking care of your health, you stand a better chance of avoiding and clearing acid reflux disorder. No-one can force you to change but improvements to your life are within your control.

Massage Chairs with More Motors are Better? Myth Buster

Posted on November 2nd, 2008
by James Knolan

There is a massage chair myth that has been permeated through time about the number of motors. This myth claims that the more motors contained in the massage chair, the better the massage chair. At the height of this myth, companies were claiming to have more and more motors in their massage chairs. The thought being that with more motors, the massage is greatly enhanced. Claims were made to have a massage chair with 6, 8 and even 18 motors. Of course, having more motors could enable more varied movements in the shiatsu massage chairs, but is this actually true?

The more motors the better the chair myth is going to be put to the myth buster test. Obviously, having more motors enables more massage options to be possible. Motors are not cheap, in fact they are expensive. Immediately, there is a quality versus quantity tradeoff. Having 18 motors versus 3 motors would make the cost of the 18 motor chair skyrocket, if they use the same quality motor. First concern is the quality level of motors in a massage chair with 18 motors.

Weight is a consideration since motors weigh between 2 lbs to 5 lbs each. Imagine a massage chair with 18 motors, each weighing 5 lbs for a total of 90 lbs just in motors. Motors can quickly add more weight. Space is another important consideration. There is only so much space in a shiatsu massage chair for the motors and the mechanisms driven by the motor. Shiatsu assage chairs with 3 motors in the chair back are already constrained, where do the other 15 motors go?

The real issue is does having more motors increase the quality of the massage? After all, this is the basis of the massage motor myth. Most shiatsu massage chairs, whether high end luxury models to even lower level models tend to use a 3 motor system for the back massage rollers. One motor drives the roller unit up and down the chair back. Two motors are mounted on the roller system with one motor to perform a kneading motion and the other motor to perform a tapping motion. Both motors can be run simultaneously to product a kneading/tapping massage.

There is a 5 motor design where the kneading and tapping use two motors each. This is done by having a motor on both the left and right side rollers for both the kneading and tapping. Having 2 motors for kneading splits the duty and should lead to longer motor life. Did it make any difference in the massage capabilities? There was no noticeable difference. Is more better?

Some massage chair companies started this fad and some how it caught on and became perpertuated into myth. We still see massage chair companies hyping that they have 12 or 15 motors. It is obvious that these motors cannot all drive the massage mechanisms. These companies think that if it moves, we can count it as a motor. Having motors is not enough, what do they actually do? This is a myth built on hype and unsubstantiated facts. Why would someone want an overly complex chair with low quality motors? Simple is the elegant solution.

Alternative Treatments For Acid Reflux

Posted on November 1st, 2008
by Frank Robson

While some leading medications work for everyone, they actually make the Acid Reflux worse after you stop taking them. In particular, when a patient takes the medications classed as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI), they inhibit the production of acid.

But if you stop taking PPIs, your body responds by bouncing back and producing even more acid, a process known as rebound hypersecretion. Because of this, even if you are considering alternative methods of treating your acid reflux, it’s not a good idea to suddenly stop taking PPIs.

A number of herbs are known to help with heartburn. Tea made from coriander, anise, fennel, caraway seeds, chamomile and angelica can help after eating. Other teas that are known to help are peppermint and spearmint. Many health food stores also carry capsules made from peppermint and caraway seed oils which many people have found to help.

There are specialists who rely on roots and herbs. Ginger root is one herb that’s used in Ayurveda, and taking it regularly can help reduce acid reflux.

Fiber intake can also help to reduce your symptoms as it helps your body to process the acid in your food. If you’re not fond of high-fiber foods, there are alternatives, such as fiber pills and powder you can mix with water.

Nicotine is another contributor to acid reflux, so if you smoke stopping can help. It causes the esophageal sphincter to relax, which can allow fluids and acid to “swish around” more freely. Plus, stress can sometimes be related to smoking which can also affect your digestion.

You should avoid raw onions, citrus fruits, ice cream, spicy foods, coffee, tea, cheese, potatoes, ground beef and spaghetti as well.

Some of the other alternative treatments that people have success with include licorice, meadowsweet, some digestive enzymes such as papain, and chamomile. Even marshmallow, which together with chamomile can work as an anti-inflammatory, has helped some people with their acid reflux.

In the end, a good diet, positive changes in your lifestyle, weight control and lowering your stress level will all help reduce the symptoms of acid reflux.

Obstacles Created by Snoring

Posted on October 31st, 2008
by Christian Goodman

Most of us have lived with snoring all of our lives. Husbands snore on the recliner while ‘watching the game.’

Maybe you are the snorer, maybe you live with one. It doesn’t require much more effort than falling asleep. And we all sleep.

What is not so obvious though, is WHY people snore.

As I embarked on my “The Stop Snoring Exercise Program” I began uncovering some of the lesser known culprits of snoring.

Reasons we snore

One reason is unavoidable. We were born with certain physical traits that make us snore.

Certain deformities in the nose or enlarged parts of the throat may contribute to snoring.

Men tend to snore more often overall. And growing older is often another major contributor. The muscles (including those in and around the throat) are not as strong as they used to be.

Reduced air flow through the nose due to an illness or having allergies can result in snoring as well as a poor night’s rest.

Those things can’t be changed. We have little control over those factors.

There are things we can control though. Physical condition, smoking, inbibing to a degree that affects sleep, prescribed, over the counter or ‘other’ drugs and sleeping position.

Effects of Snoring

People who snore suffer. So do those who love and live with them.

Couples resign themselves to separates rooms when sleeping - creating distance where normally closeness would reign.

It can be detrimental to our relationships, also to our own health.

We have study after study proving the value of a good night’s sleep. But we also have sleep studies proving that snoring is waking many up throughout the night. It’s a nuisance that’s robbing us of the most rewarding ‘deep’ sleep that our bodies crave.

Which Type of Snore Do You Have?

Snoring with a closed mouth can be the result of tongue position. It can deter air passage.

Back snoring is very common and can be alleviated by switching sleep positions. If your mouth is open when snoring, it may be the fleshy throat area creating a disturbance.

If snoring seems to come with mouth open or closed, on your back, stomach and any other imaginable position, well. these are generally more complex cases.

Improving your physical condition or bettering your sleep posture will help a large number of people who suffer.

I have a program designed to help you stop snoring quickly, easily, and almost effortlessly. Learn and practice a few simple exercises in just a few minutes each day and start enjoying a restful sleep without snoring!
