Low Cost Basic Health Insurance Is Better Than No Cover At All
Health & Fitness September 3rd, 2008If money is tight in your household than you may well have decided to skimp on medical insurance and you are definitely not alone because all too many people do not have any form of medical insurance. In their mind, they simply can’t justify paying the extra money it would take.
However, is this really a smart idea in today’s society? In almost all situations it could be a terrible mistake. When you consider the way that medical costs are rising each year even the most basic of care could cost thousands of dollars.
For example, let’s say that you have been avoiding getting medical insurance. You don’t really feel that you can afford anything extra from your account every month and so you merely put it off.
Then one day you’re on your way home from a long day at work when another driver pulls out in front of you and you swerve to miss them. As a result you leave the road and run into a tree. Then, the other driver keeps on driving simply because they are frightened. Not surprisingly, you suffer several injuries and have to be taken to the hospital.
You can’t really pick and choose whether or not you want life saving treatment following an accident. The doctors will just do whatever needs to be done and bill you later. Naturally, spending any amount of time in the emergency room is not conducive to saving you money. The hospital in our example than presents you with a bill for approximately $50,000 for all of the services they performed.
What this means is that, rather than paying a couple of hundred dollars each month for medical insurance, you are saddled with a bill which you will possibly never be able to pay. And, when you owe money to a hospital, they’ll send bill collectors and will eventually sue. You may have to declare yourself bankrupt and your credit rating is going to be ruined forever. In fact, your entire life could well be negatively affected in a situation such as this.
Some sort of health insurance coverage is better than no medical coverage at all. Incidents like this happen each day and, if you possess some form of health insurance coverage, your insurance company will be able to save your bacon. Instead of you being landed with an insurmountable bill you will have someone who is going to take care of it.
You’ll almost certainly be asked to pay something towards the cost but it is going to be much more manageable when you are getting assistance from your insurer. If you have put off purchasing some sort of medical insurance then do not do it any longer. Do not try to convince yourself that it’s not worth purchasing cover unless you are able to purchase an expensive package with all the bells and whistles.
begin small with merely the basic features needed in case of emergency and, then as you start to get more comfortable with your expenditure, slowly upgrade your plan to get the features you want. It won’t seem like such a large bite out of your monthly paycheck if you do it slowly.
Medical insurance is not something which you can really afford to live without so don’t be afraid to talk to somebody about your options. There is only one way to know what you are able to afford and that is to ask.
